The Gallery Glaces: A Multifunctional Working Interior

Award-winning design by Yu Ting Wang and Chien Hsing Chen

The Gallery Glaces is a unique and innovative design that combines functionality, sustainability, and artistic elements. Inspired by the concept of Glerie Des Glaces, this multifunctional working interior offers a dynamic and visually captivating space for collaboration and creativity.

The designers, Yu Ting Wang and Chien Hsing Chen, aimed to create a space that not only serves as a working area but also stimulates inspiration and reflection. The use of glass on both sides of the space allows for a play of reflections, enabling visitors to see things from different angles and perspectives. The Gallery Glaces is not just a working space; it is an experience.

One of the unique properties of this design is its ability to adapt to different needs and functions. The designers incorporated elements of sports and sustainable design, creating a space that encourages the exchange of ideas and fosters a sense of community. Despite the limited budget, the designers managed to maximize the functionality of the space, making it a place that speaks for itself.

The realization of The Gallery Glaces involved the use of abstract lines to separate different areas and materials. Carpets, artificial grass, and wooden floors were strategically placed to define the main functions of each area. The walls, inspired by the concept of a gallery, were adorned with grey and black mirrors, enhancing the sense of space and enlarging the site. The hanging mirrors, made with stainless steel frames and glass, create the illusion of floating glasses suspended from the ceiling.

The interaction with The Gallery Glaces is seamless and intuitive. The design takes into consideration the environmental impact, with the project joining the LEED scoring system. The choice of materials was carefully considered to minimize waste and maximize usage. Mirrors were selected as the main material, as they offer different views and reflections depending on the angle, making the space more visually interesting while using fewer materials.

The Gallery Glaces was completed in Taichung, Taiwan, between October 2016 and January 2017. The project faced several challenges, including making the space multifunctional, working within a limited budget, and meeting tight deadlines. However, the designers successfully overcame these obstacles, resulting in a design that is both aesthetically pleasing and highly functional.

The Gallery Glaces has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2017. This prestigious award celebrates designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
